Overview of Play Therapy

  • When children are having a hard time with their feelings or behaviors, they will sometimes go see a “play therapist” for help.

  • Usually, the therapist will see each child at their own special time every week. During this time, the child will get to play in the therapist’s office, using whatever toys they want; most therapists have a lot of fun toys for children to choose from.

  • The therapist will play along with the child, and along the way, will help teach them about different types of feelings, and help them express their feelings in a way that is safe and helpful.

  • Most of the time, after going to play therapy for a while, children find that they feel better and life is a little easier to deal with.
